nativity_0.jpgQuestion: I am not a believer (Christian or otherwise). But most of my employees are. So when Christmas rolls around I usually get a steady stream of subtle and not so subtle sales pitches to believe. From what I read I am guessing you are a believer yourself. Can you help me respond to the pitches in a way that is respectful, but doesn’t lead to more of the same? This is getting old and (frankly) it seems to hurt productivity around here.

Answer: Tonight you will be visited by three spirits. The first at midnight, the second at one o’clock and the last at two…

Just kidding. I couldn’t resist.

Lessons learned in San Francisco

Many of our readers are probably not aware that I have been in San Francisco having a highly precise surgery performed on my right knee. (Thankfully, all went well and I am on to the rehab phase!) But as an investment manager I am never really "off," so you can imagine the difficulty of watching the market falling 5 days in a row during my first five days away from home. 

These times are not for the faint of heart. They do, however provide opportunities for perspective, and I can't stress enough how important perspective is. With time on my hands, I have been considering those lessons I have learned in my 31 plus years as a financial professional. 

Do your words and your wallet say the same thing?

My husband and I have tried to teach him to be responsible, but we are still having to pay his phone bill and his car insurance, and whenever he comes home he asks me for cash. He’s out of college and he’s got a job, though not a good one. He says he doesn’t make enough money, but this just can’t keep going on. What do you suggest?

Answer: You say you have tried to teach your son to be responsible, but actually the opposite is true.

I don’t think just putting everything in a retirement plan is a good idea, because we might need to get to the money before then. But if not there, where should we put it?

money regrets_0.jpgQUESTION: I have totally screwed up my financial life. Where do I start? Overspending, maxed out credit cards, a bankruptcy. I mean it’s bad. I just woke up one day and I had dug myself into this incredible hole. But now I want to get out and I really don’t know how. Is it even possible?
